This week over 1,500 of teens and volunteers will gather at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center to participate in Steubenville on the Bayou. This will be the twelfth Steubenville on the Bayou and its eleventh year at the Civic Center. While the Houma conference is unique compared to other Steubenville conferences, something they all share is that it is a one-of-a-kind experience. Conference director Shawn Lapeyrouse gives us an insider preview of the conference and what can be expected.
How has this event changed since its first year in Houma?
The second Steubenville On the Bayou Conference was held at Houma Civic Center eleven years ago. Back then, the total number of participants was much higher. To accommodate the large capacity of the conference huge tents, air conditioners, and generators were placed in the Civic Center parking lot where the participants could be fed. Franciscan University has opened another conference in Texas allowing Steubenville on the Bayou to become more intimate and not having to take chances with bad weather by having part of the conference outdoors. Shawn said, “Our participants love having the entire site indoors, in the Civic Center. It keeps it much safer and easier to meet people from other churches!”
What makes Steubenville on the Bayou unique compared to other Steubenville conferences?
Hands down, anyone who has been to other sites will tell you it’s our Southern Hospitality! When attending Steubenville on the Bayou everyone is greeting with a smile and a hug. And then there is the food. The amazing Cajun cuisine is one of the reasons teens want to experience Steubenville on the Bayou.
How would you describe this event to someone that has never attended? What can the first-timers expect?
New participants should come with an open heart, an open mind, and no expectations. It is an incredible experience with phenomenal speakers, amazing worship leaders and tons of adults volunteering through the weekend so that teens can come and experience the love of our Lord!
