Event Preview: The 89th Annual Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce Banquet

The Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 89th Annual Banquet on January 24 at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. This week we interviewed Suzanne Carlos, president of the Chamber, to share some insight on the event.

Tell us about this year’s guest speaker and why he was selected to speak at the banquet?

Phil Roop, AKA “Pastor Phil,” has invested 37 years as a pastor and motivator. After an injury, he answered his call to ministry. Mr. Roop has served as lead pastor at Bethel Cape Girardeau in Missouri. He has spoken in U.S. and international schools as a leader of Dream Makers, a motivational assembly team inspiring youth to make positive, internal life choices. Mr. Roop has traveled to multiple countries training indigenous leaders to impact their communities. He has also spoken at men’s conferences and churches across the country.

He is a 19 year cancer survivor and says, “What has seen me far in this life is a positive and enthusiastic outlook, plus a never say die attitude!”

He was selected to speak because of his over the top positive personality, his ability to motivate and inspire people, and his genuine passion for people.

What community awards will be presented and why are they significant?

The Chamber STAR award recognizes an employee, manager, or owner of a Chamber-member business or organization who exceeds expectations with regard to customer service, leadership, and/or volunteer community involvement. The Community Champion award recognizes a chamber member company for their contributions and support of local not-for-profit organizations. Next, the Outstanding Diplomat award recognizes a chamber member who volunteers to assist the Chamber in various ways with events, member retention, and member recruitment.  Also we will recognize The Courier’s Citizen of the Year, HTV’s Eugene Folse Outstanding Veteran, and the American Legion’s Teenager of the Year.

Who attends the event? How can a business join the chamber?

The annual banquet is the first general membership meeting of the year for the Chamber.  All Chamber members are invited to attend, and the general public is welcome to attend as well.

Businesses, non-profit organizations, and individuals may join the Chamber.  To join the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce you may go to or call the office at 985-876-5600.
